Again, I am no expert and I didn't even stay at a Holiday Inn last night. It is a big beast, but that makes it easy to access. If any part of this machine fails, I am ready for it. RAM is still on the high side, but SSDs are lowering in price. Most parts are easily swappable and some are even cheap. This one is a great value because the market was flooded from designers and ad firms upgrading to newer equipment. I needed a computer for the kids anyway.Īll computers fail. One WAY faster than thee other, but even the slower (single screen) unit is better than most PCs you can buy off the shelf sub $1000. I put the old card in it and now I have 2 Mac Pros. Just for fun, I decided to see if the old unit had a bad GPU. I also took that opportunity to add a USB 3.0 card. I swapped them out and found that the secon d monitor plug wasn't working so I bought an upgraded GPU on eBay. Back up and running and I didn't even need to restore from a backup. All I had to do was swap out my RAM trays (that I had upgraded) and my hard drive sleds (also upgraded), and fired it up.

I had no idea why, but I found an identical one on eBay for a great price. I found one on craigslist and upgraded the ram, replaced the hard drive with SSDs in a RAID striped configuration, and cloned it onto an external hard drive. I'm happy with my 2008 as my music applications still support El Capitan 10.11. If your serious about running the latest Mac OS Sierra you will have to pony up the big bucks for a 2010-2012 model. Mac Pro 2008-2009 (3,1 and 4,1) will only run up to El Capitan. But be aware not all Mac Pro's run the latest OSX. If you need muscle for productivity type of applications this is right for you.

I'm running OSX El Capitan and I don't have all the maintenance required by a Windows OS. It has server grade parts and this is why these machines last. Despite the age, this is a very adequate machine for my needs. I bought mine for music production and music related usage. Gaming on these is not recommended due to lack of Direct X suite. I highly recommend this machine (2008-2012 editions) for productivity. The older Mac Pro's were very well engineered with thought and care for longevity and forward thinking. It is also a very handsome machine to show off. Load this up with 16GB (can use 32GB total) for smoother operation.
